    My journey with raised beds led me to making them out of concrete. We used basalt fibers (they don't chemically react with the alkalinity of the concrete & are 3x lighter & 2.5 stronger (tensile) than steel fibers) mixed in with the concrete (+ dye for color) & used some hardware cloth to reinforce the corners, otherwise no rebar. We built them right on top of French drains we dug to deal with drainage (we covered the trench from bottom to top with landscape fabric to greatly slow infiltration of dirt over time, as well as keeping the concrete mix out) as well as a cushion to buffer against the seasonal, clay shifting in the ground. We made them 4" wide at the top & 6" wide at the base & 2' tall. It took us all summer to build them with just the 2 of us. (We wanted them to lie fallow that year as they needed to rest after 7 years of rotational use.) We set up forms with plywood & aluminum roofing sheets, filled & gently vibrated them to ensure even distribution & let them set for a week, covered with tarps to keep the moisture in. & then filled them after 2 weeks with mostly half decomposed wood chips which would finish by the time spring planting came back around. They've stood up with no cracks, no mole/vole invasions & good, healthy soil for 3 years now.

    Can you put crushed eggshells for calcium into the soil??

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott 10 годин тому

      Crushed eggshells don't add as much calcium as many people think. It is not in a form that plants use and does not break down easily.

      They should not die but they won't thrive and produce fruit in soil without the proper pH.

    New to green stalk here. I have set mine up but I feel like the water is moving through the whole the Ing to fast. I can’t get it filled to the top of reservoir for it to leak down because it runs out to fast. Should I be blocking the top center whole?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott 10 годин тому

      The top reservoir normally drains quickly and fills up each of the internal reservoirs on each tier. If you block the hole the lower levels will not get the water they need.

It was just to much of a shock to transplant. Also, Oregon had over average rains which was crazy wet even for us. Lol.

    It seems silly to me to call a bed no-dig if you’re moving soil on top of it. Effectively, that is digging. You’re shoveling a layer of soil on top of your ground, and that soil is “dug.” What’s “no-dig” about that? No did is what Ruth Stout did. Not digging into any soil.

    Great video but when you use 2x8s and screw your four foot end boards on there, you lose the interior space of the thickness of the lumber. So instead of having an interior planting space of 24 by 96 inches, you will have 21 by 93 inches. If you're doing square foot gardening and growing plants that need 1 square foot each, you might not have enough space to get 32 plants in a 4x8 food bed.

    i wonder if i can just ONLY water blueberries with very dilute vinegar solution of pH 4.5 to 5.5, because I would guess this should never cause pH in the soil system to go below 4.5 of course because the vinegar would at the lowest be pH 4.5 (easily measured with pH paper). also tap water is like pH 8, so maybe i should always make this tap water into dilute vinegar solution of pH 4.5 to 5.5...i guess i would first have to test if continually dousing my pH 7 soil with this ph 4.5 to 5.5 vinegar solution will over time cause the soil to become like at least below pH 6...i can only hope that such a mild vinegar wouldnt kill too many microorganisms
